FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions:

Membership

  • What is included with a Sensible membership?

Sensible clients will have access to 15 annual appointments for psychiatric medication management. At appointments, the psychiatric nurse practitioner will assess, diagnose, and treat mental health disorders with medication and referrals to appropriate mental health resources. Outside of appointments, clients will have access to convenient scheduling and communication with the provider.

  • Who can sign up for Sensible?

Sensible is designed for adults over 18 years of age with previous or suspected mental health disorders.

  • What disorders does Sensible treat?

Sensible is designed for the long term treatment of the following disorders: Depression (including MDD, PMDD, and PPD), bipolar, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, panic, trauma, alcohol use, some eating/feeding, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD).

Sensible does not treat people who are acutely suicidal or in need of emergent care, people who have been diagnosed with dementia, or people who take the medication clozapine.

  • What are the hours of service?

Sensible offers appointments on Mondays from 9:00a-4:00p and Wednesdays from 9:00a-8:00p.

  • How do clients cancel their membership? How long do the services continue after cancellation?

Memberships can be canceled at any time by emailing hello@sensiblementalhealth.com. Services will continue for an additional 30 days. Clients who resubscribe will be subject to the reenrollment fee.

Cost and Insurance

  • How much does a Sensible membership cost?

Sensible membership is $115 per month, with the first three months due at the time of enrollment.

If clients cancel their membership and choose to restart, the re-enrollment fee is $345.

  • Do clients have to pay the membership fee if they don’t have an appointment?

Yes. The monthly cost is priced based on the assumption that most clients, once stable, will have appointments every few months. Clients also have the option to call, text, or email at any time. Part of the monthly cost goes to keeping the client panel small enough so appointment access is much quicker than the industry average of 50 days.

  • Can clients use insurance for Sensible?

Insurance companies do not support the Sensible model. Sensible accepts credit and debit cards for the membership payments.

  • Do clients still need comprehensive health insurance?

Clients may need insurance for blood draws, pharmacy benefits, psychiatric hospitalizations, physical health needs, and to fulfill the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.

  • What if clients require blood draws, intensive outpatient programs, or hospitalization?

Sensible memberships do not cover the costs of services outside of those defined in the services agreement. Clients will use their insurance or alternate funding sources for these costs.

Appointments

  • Is it really possible for a health care provider to be on time?

For his entire career, Karl has started the vast majority of his appointments within five minutes of the scheduled start time.

  • Does Sensible include individual talk therapy?

While talk therapy (think, deep conversations on a couch) is a critical component of mental health treatment, Sensible does not currently offer dedicated therapy sessions. We can recommend therapy providers upon request.

  • What type of appointments does Sensible offer?

Sensible offers both virtual and in-person appointments. The in-person appointments are in Edina.

  • Where does the client need to be located at the time of each telehealth appointment?

Due to health care licensing regulations, clients need to be located in the state of Minnesota at the time of each appointment.

Controlled Substances

  • What is a controlled substance?

Certain medications with the potential for abuse or addiction are classified as controlled substances by the Federal government. In mental health, the controlled medications for anxiety include benzodiazepines such as diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), or alprazolam (Xanax); for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the controlled medications include stimulants such as amphetamine (Adderall) or methylphenidate (Ritalin).

  • What is the Sensible process for new clients to obtain prescriptions for controlled substances previously filled by other providers?

Clients who have previously taken medications classified as controlled substances will have an initial appointment to discuss their mental health history, their fit for the Sensible model, and a treatment plan moving forward. Clients will submit their psychological testing results if they have previously had a diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The Sensible provider will make an independent evaluation regarding the continued use of the controlled substance.

  • Must clients have psychological testing results for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder?

Yes. The testing will need to be conducted by a licensed psychologist trained to rule out significant mental health disorders as well as rule in ADHD with the Continuous Performance Test, IVA, or similar assessments. Online assessments or diagnoses based on screening tools (surveys) alone will not be accepted.
